BBC Radio Cymru has appointed Betsan Powys as editor of programmes.

Powys will work closely with Sian Gwynedd, head of Welsh language programmes and services, and will be responsible for commissioning and overseeing the station's general programming.

Powys has been BBC Cymru Wales' political editor since 2006, reporting on programmes including Panorama and Week In Week. She was also BBC Cymru Wales’ arts and media correspondent and presented Mastermind Cymru on S4C.

Gwynedd said: “It’s a challenging time for Radio Cymru but I’m certain Betsan has the skills, experience and drive to take on the challenges facing the station.”

Powys added: “Leading Radio Cymru is a step in a new direction for me after an interesting and lively period in Welsh politics… and I’m very excited that I now have the opportunity to lead the station to a new future.”

Powys will begin her role on 1 July.
