12th February 2016

The Independent and Independent on Sunday newspapers will cease print editions in March and become digital-only, owners ESI Media have confirmed.

The last print edition of The Independent will be published on Saturday 26 March and the last issue of Independent on Sunday will be 20 March.

ESI Media has also confirmed that the i newspaper will be sold to Johnston Press, subject to Johnston Press shareholder approval.

Amol Rajan, editor of The Independent, will take the role of editor-at-large across the digitally-focused Independent. Some redundancies among editorial staff are expected. However, digital content roles will be created and Oliver Duff, editor of i, tweeted of significant recruitment to the new i editorial team.
