Former Times deputy editor Ben Preston is joining The Independent.

He has been appointed executive editor and will join the paper when Roger Alton takes over from Simon Kelner.

Preston left the Times in February, soon after he was moved from deputy editor to the new post of editor of the Times’ international editions.

Preston’s start date is yet to be confirmed.
