National Energy Efficiency Week Heralds Day of Geothermal Energy
- Wednesday, 26 October 2005
This week is National Energy Efficiency Week and Ice Energy (www.iceenergy.co.uk) is delighted to take this opportunity to educate homeowners on alternative heating sources to inefficient, costly and polluting oil and gas heating systems.
Enter the Ground Source Heat Pump, which harnesses the natural solar heat stored in the ground around your house to provide clean and renewable energy for all your central heating and hot water needs, whatever the weather, day and night.
What’s more, this energy is free, installing the heat pump is supported by government grants and running costs of the heat pump are a fraction of what you pay to maintain even the most efficient boiler.
This is not a revolutionary new concept. Britain simply lags behind in terms of energy efficiency. Most new builds in Sweden (95%), where Ice Energy’s heat pumps are manufactured, are now fitted with such systems and more and more people in the UK are considering switching to geothermal from costly oil and gas heating systems. In fact, ground source heat pumps make the headlines more and more frequently, from bore holes on the Queen’s estate to the front gardens of semis in London. And judging by the order books at Ice Energy, this trend is likely to increase in the near future.
Rocketing fuel prices have helped convince people that they should seek alternatives. This is why companies such as Ice Energy have been busy promoting the use of geothermal energy, either for new builds or retrofits.
Not convinced it works for you? Consider this: Ice Energy heat pumps can extract enough heat from the ground around your home to cover your central heating and hot water needs even during the harshest winter (you could even heat a pool using the heat extracted from an ice rink!) The company also offers grants of up to £1,500 per household towards installation costs, and whether you have a tiny garden, huge lawn or live next to a pond or lake, there’s a heat pump to suit your plot. There is no annual scheduled maintenance and you recoup the cost of the heat pump over a period of 5 years (against oil) and 10 years (against gas), with a heat pump lifespan of 25 years.
It’s cleaner, it’s more efficient, and doesn’t cost the Earth, literally or metaphorically. Find out more at www.iceenergy.co.uk or visit Ice Energy at the Show House Exhibition (ExCel, 1-3 Nov).

---------- NOTES FOR EDITORS ---------
Ice Energy has sole distribution rights for heat pumps manufactured by a top Swedish company who are European leaders in ground source heating technology. More information can be found at www.iceenergy.co.uk or by calling 01865 882202.
The Clear Skies programme was set up in 2003 to promote renewable energy and help reach the government target of reducing carbon monoxide emissions by 60% by 2050. Funded by the DTI, it gives homeowners in England, Wales and Northern Ireland the opportunity to obtain a £400 grant towards a cost of a solar water heating system installation (in Scotland, grants amount to 30% of the total installation costs and are funded by the Scottish Executive). Grants are not means tested. Under the programme, organisations such as housing associations can apply for grants covering up to 50% of project costs.
