‘Classic Wines of France’- Paintings of Great Vintages by Brian Davies at John Adams Fine Art at the Ebury Galleries Tuesday 6th – Tuesday 20th November 2007

  • Thursday, 09 August 2007

John Adams Fine Art at the Ebury Galleries is hosting a celebration of the classic wines of France from the great Bordeaux châteaux with paintings by Brian Davies from Tuesday 6th until Tuesday 20th November, 2007.

The paintings will provide a unique reminder of those vintages one has had the pleasure of savouring, be it a 1982 Château Latour or a 1978 Château Mouton Rothschild, a meeting between fine art and fine wine.

A 'portrait' of a spectacular vintage provides an exclusive and memorable gift for a birthday or an anniversary.

Brian Davies is well known for his still-life paintings and some years ago he started producing another kind of picture, stripped of all superfluous elements, imparting a bold austerity to the compositions, perhaps anticipating the simplification apparent today in contemporary art and design. At first, these pictures were received with respectful incredulity which changed to enthusiastic appreciation with delighted clients commissioning such works.

The bottles, usually set against recessive shadow, are caught in a pool of light, a bloom of dust delineating the contour of the object on its journey from the cool, dark cellar to the table. ‘In Vino Veritas’ perhaps, but also in wine lies hopes dreams, history, poetry and civilisation itself.

John Adams, Director of the Ebury Galleries, commented: “We are delighted to show Brian Davies’ paintings at the Ebury Galleries, offering wine connoisseurs and enthusiasts the opportunity to view these splendid works.”

John Adams Fine Art, based in the Ebury Galleries, Belgravia, has long been recognised for promoting contemporary artists of note alongside antique works. The gallery was founded in 1990 and is known internationally for its eclectic collection of superb quality art spanning the centuries.

Notes to Editors:

Brian Davies

Brian Davies followed a banking career in London and Sydney, Australia, where he began painting. After several years, he abandoned finance for fine art and returned to Europe and ‘la vie bohême’, spending time in France and Holland where he became fascinated by the seventeenth century Dutch Masters, developing an enduring interest in still-life and displaying a talent that has matured over the years.

His still-life studies are painted with infinite variety and possess a timeless appeal, earning him a distinguished reputation.

The artist lives in London and the Languedoc hills in southern France, a place not so very far from the great wine producing region of Bordeaux.

Brian Davies has exhibited at a number of summer exhibitions at the Royal Academy and the Paris Salon, holding many exhibitions in London, the provinces and overseas. His work is represented in corporate and private collections in Great Britain, Europe and the United States.
