The Official “Mega Monday”… was there ever any doubt?

  • Wednesday, 09 December 2009

Many dubbed last Monday (30th Nov) as this year’s ‘Mega Monday’ for online shopping in the UK. It was the busiest day of the year at that point, with independent retailers notching up a 21.3% rise in sales compared with the busiest day last year. So understandably some industry analysts were blowing the Mega Monday whistle a little early.

Sales were at such an astounding level that it was the busiest day on record. ISPs even recorded plummeting email delivery rates due to the sheer weight of order confirmation emails sent from online retailers. Cause for excitement, without doubt.

However, more shrewd members of the online fraternity tipped the first Monday of December to better the premature ‘Mega Monday’ of last week, seeing record growth for another consecutive year online.

Only last week, our ekmPowershop.com independent study of over 6,000 online shops confirmed that the 30th November was in fact busier than the official 2008 Mega Monday. However, we also predicted there to be a `Mega Monday Double’; with an even bigger Monday to follow this week. True to form, Monday 7th December was in fact nearly 20% busier than the previous week, well and truly taking its mantle as the true `Mega Monday’.

That same panel of 6,000 online shops have indeed shown a rise of 19% from last Monday. That’s a staggering 44% greater than last year’s busiest day.

Online giants Play.com were processing thousands of pounds per second yesterday; but it is the independent retailers who are stealing the show. Rubbing shoulders with retail giants, and processing over £6,000 per hour during peak hours.

Steven Hickey, Head of Commercial Development at ekmPowershop.com observes "We see too much emphasis given to the giants of the retail sector both online and offline, when year on year we see how small independent businesses with small budgets win big by having their own online shop. Many of these small independents today will become the giants of tomorrow."
