UK Employees Hot and Bothered About Office Romance

  • Thursday, 11 February 2010

London, UK – 11 February 2010 – Valentine’s Day is upon us, but finding love in the workplace seems to have employees truly hot and bothered according to Simply Hired, www.Simplyhired.co.uk, the largest job search engine.

When asked in an online site poll, 50 percent of Simply Hired's UK visitors think dating a colleague is a bad idea, believing their professional and private life should be kept separate, while 35 percent felt colleagues who date one another made other employees feel awkward. However, 64 percent felt it was okay for colleagues to date as long as the relationship was kept professional within the workplace - that’s a big thumbs down to public displays of affection!

While dating another colleague wasn’t completely ruled out, 28 percent actually felt that the workplace was a great environment to meet a partner and 30 percent met their current partner that way. The majority of couples felt they worked well together within the office (35 percent) and that it made them a stronger couple (23 percent) although they admitted to the occasional argument!

Love is not always in the air at work. More than half of Simplyhired.co.uk visitors (55 percent) have never had an office romance and 17 percent of those who did felt their office relationship was driving them apart.

Could romance continue to blossom in the office on Valentine’s Day? Yes, 58 percent would love flowers to be delivered to their office, while 41 percent felt that might be a little cheesy.

Katya White, senior marketing communications manager at Simply Hired, commented: “Office romance remains controversial however it’s a high possibility given the amount of time you spend at work. Some of the most inspirational brands have had a strong couple behind them however it is always important to leave your personal issues at the door to create a healthy working environment.”
