The paper cups are generally non-recyclable due to a plastic resin coating applied during the manufacturing process and can take years to breakdown. In landfill, the paper component which decomposes anaerobically in the absence of oxygen, releases methane, a greenhouse gas over 20 times more potent at trapping heat in the atmosphere compared to CO2.
