Central Independent News & Media has appointed John Newton as news editor of West Midlands freesheets the Sutton Coldfield Observer, Great Barr Observer, Walsall Advertiser and the Lichfield Mercury.

Newton, previously a reporter for the Sutton Coldfield Observer, started the role in mid April. He replaces Laura Vickers, who has moved to the Gloucestershire Echo.
