Blog Spotlight with Vicki Higham, editor of A Life of Geekery

Hi Vicki! Tell us about your blog, how did you get started?

I'm obsessed with food. Before my blog came to be, I was already developing my own recipes and sharing them with friends; a blog just felt like the natural progression. Two years on, my blog is now a mixture of food and personal lifestyle posts with an ever-growing readership from all over the world.

How do you source content for your blog?

My content springs from organic ideas. An idea will just come to me for a recipe or project and I know it's time to write about it when I can't get it out of my head.

Do you have a favourite post or one that best sums up your blog?

My favourite post to date is when I shared my homemade icecream recipe. I want my blog to help people find confidence in the kitchen and learn to experiment. This recipe is so flexible and easy to customise, making it a great place to start. I've had fantastic feedback from readers that have turned this into a family favourite.

Do you write reviews?

I often review kitchenware, ingredients, and gadgets which are read by around 18,000 unique readers a month.

How did you build a following for your blog?

Most of my followers came across me on Twitter, reddit, or sites like foodgawker. I guess they saw something that they liked and decided to stick around.

Are you PR friendly?

I am very PR friendly! I work with PRs on a very regular basis and although I don't post articles that haven't been written by myself, I'm more than willing to create content that fits a company's needs.

How best do you like to be approached by PRs?

I love to hear from PRs via social media or email, but a personal touch goes a long way. It always shows if a PR has done their research and got to know me a little before getting in contact and it makes the whole process of working with them more enjoyable.

What’s in store for your blogging career in 2014?

I have big plans for the rest of 2014. I'm working on some exciting projects at the moment and I hope to reveal a fresh new look in the coming months. My boyfriend and I are currently renovating our first house together so more interiors and DIY posts are on the cards, too!
