David Hellqvist: Freelance journalist focus

David Hellqvist is a freelance journalist based in London. He writes about fashion, music and film and has contributed to Dazed & Confused, German Zoo, JC Report and The Beat Happening.

This week FeaturesExec caught up with David to discuss his most memorable work and what he’d do if we gave him £1,000.

About your journalism:

What do you write about?
Mostly fashion, music and film, but anything lifestyle or culture related will do.

Where are we likely to see your work?
I’ve written for newspapers, magazines and websites. So far I’ve contributed to German Zoo Magazine, Dazed Digital (website of Dazed & Confused) JC Report (where I’m a contributing editor), The Beat Happening, Bonmagazine.com, Androgyny Magazine (feature editor) and Viceland.com. I also write two blogs; davidhellqvist.blogspot.com and fashioninpolitics.blogspot.com

What’s the most memorable work you’ve done?
Probably an interview with actor Christian Slater for Zoo Magazine, but I also cherish putting Androgyny Magazine together. It’s a biannual art/fashion magazine working around themes. We’ve done red hair, nomads and an issue about how blind people perceive beauty, fashion and life in general. We learnt that they see more than we do sometimes!

What interview or feature would you love the chance to do?
I have a special interest in fashion in politics, so I’d love to talk platform shoes with Kim Jong-il, sportswear with Fidel Castro and common sense with Silvio Berlusconi.

About you:

How would you pay the bills if you weren’t a journalist?
Who said journalism pays my bills?

If we gave you £1000, how would you spend it?
A well-deserved holiday for my girlfriend and me.

What’s the best advice anyone ever gave you?
“The better you look, the more you see” Brett Easton Ellis

What books are on your bedside table, magazines in your bag, or blogs on your screen?
I read prose and poetry by beat authors, the Guardian is my newspaper, I flick through just about any magazine I can get my hands on but I prefer Monocle and Fantastic Man.
