Focus with Anette Wildar of AREA Magazine

This week, FeaturesExec interviewed Anette Wildar, director of AREA Magazine. Area is a free, monthly lifestyle magazine aimed at affluent residents in Bristol.

About the publication:

What makes you different from the other publications in your sector?
We have a very targeted readership, focusing only on the affluent areas of the city. We are a local magazine, with the content and feel of a glossy national. We also dedicate 70% of the magazine to editorial content which is higher than any other local magazine in this area.

What stories are you most interested about covering in the magazine?
Fashion, travel, interior, garden, beauty, entertainment, food recipes, celebrity profiles, motoring, technology, legal and finance, as well as local-interest features to Bristol.

How do you see the magazine developing in years to come?
AREA magazine will expand to other areas across the UK, starting with Bath, Cheltenham and Cardiff.

About PRs:

What information/input from PRs is most useful to your magazine?
High resolution images and very brief press releases. We will always follow up for more information if needed.

What’s the best starting point for a PR who wants to tell you about their client?
Email with a press release and images.

When is the best time for PRs to contact you & when is your deadline for contributions?
The sooner the better as we work quite far in advance. Our copy deadline for all features is on the 11th of each month.

About you:

Describe a typical day at work.
There is no such thing as a typical day at work. Brainstorming meetings with the team on how to improve the magazine, look through upcoming features, select what is featured in the next issue and delegating to the team, subbing all articles and features, liaising with the advertising team to see if any of the advertisers represent an interesting story, attending events..the list goes on.

Where have you worked previously, and how did you end up in your current position?
I worked at Conde Nast in London for both Tatler magazine and House and Garden magazine and then decided to launched AREA magazine with my business partner, Anna Snell.
