Retro cricketing magazine launches

Backspin, a new cricket title from the team behind Backpass, has launched with a pilot edition.

The pilot issue – which includes a feature on the six sixes of Garry Sobers in 1968 and interviews with Derek Underwood, Ray East, Dennis Amiss and Nigel Briers – is likely to become a quarterly “very quickly,” according to co-creator Mike Berry.

Berry, along with fellow creator Sandra Nicholson, say they were “doing our little bit to keep print alive” and created work for up to 10 freelance journalists with the pilot issue.

Football title Backpass launched in 2007, and has gone from a subscription-only title into that one that is now available in most major newsagents in the UK, with a bi-monthly circulation of around 9,000.

Less than 5,000 copies of Backspin were produced for sale in a limited number of small newsagents. Over 1,000 have already been sold at the price of £3.99.
