Changes to BBC Radio 1 weekend and specialist shows

L-R Alice Levine, Daniel P Carter, Huw Stephens

BBC Radio 1 is to make changes to its weekend and specialist programming from September, which will also see a number of presenters leave.

At weekends, Alice Levine will host an afternoon show from 13:00 to 16:00. Daniel P Carter will front a rock show on Sunday evenings between 19:00 and 22:00.

Huw Stephens will present a programme Monday to Wednesday from 22:00 to 01:00 which will focus on new music including BBC Introducing content across the UK.

Dan & Phil, who currently host Sunday evenings on Radio 1, will move to Mondays from 21:00 to 22:00. Radio 1 Stories, a documentary strand, moves to Tuesdays 21:00 to 22:00, while The Surgery will air Wednesdays in the time slot.

As a result of these changes, Edith Bowman, Nihal, Mike Davies, Rob Da Bank, Jen Long, Ally McCrae, CJ Beatz, Crissy Criss and Robbo Ranx will all leave Radio 1 and BBC Radio 1Xtra in a reaction to widespread budget cuts across the BBC.

Ben Cooper, controller of Radio 1 and 1Xtra said: “These cuts to our budget are hurting, it means I have had to make some tough choices and say goodbye to some friends and respected colleagues. I believe these new schedules continue to innovate, reflect and celebrate the UK’s youth and music culture.”
